For example, Roku Private channels are free and have some really unique content you won’t see elsewhere (this has been changed recently to Roku beta channels). However, some premium applications and channels cost extra per month when you use them on Roku.

There is no cost for upgrading the software on Roku and Roku channels are updated frequently at no cost outside of having internet. You will need an internet connection with a minimum download speed of 3.0 Mbps for standard definition. HD requires a minimum download speed of 9.0 Mbps.

Your streaming requirements will determine what device you need and the costs associated are usually feature and quality related.

Phone call about Roku charging each month

Roku will never call you and inform you that you need to pay for a premium service of some type.

Many fraudulent ‘fake’ companies have been known to call Roku users and inform them that they need to pay a fee or else they will stop your Roku service. This is a scam and it is best to ignore these calls or report them to Roku support.

I was recently asked for advice from someone who was called by a blocked number and continually reached out about Roku monthly subscriptions they owe, which as we discussed earlier does not exist.

Roku accounts are always 100% free to create (besides having an internet connection to do so).

Scams demanding payment to create a Roku account: No one should ask for your credit card information to create a Roku account or register your streaming device (ex. Roku Express). Some people even pretend to be “support agents” for Roku. Do not answer or speak to these fraudulent calls.

Is the Internet required for a Roku or apps on Roku?

Yes, Roku requires a reliable internet connection to send and receive data for streaming. You can not stream without Wi-Fi or connection via ethernet because Roku does not get its data the same way a cable subscription from a service provider allows for.

Wi-Fi works well and has been tested by the mediapeanut.com team, but when your Roku connection is weak you may want to test an ethernet connection, especially if you’re streaming 4K UHD quality and are having issues a router reset won’t fix the slow speed. Why won’t my Roku TV play any apps or movies until I check the connection?

This has nothing to do with not paying any charges or monthly costs associated with Roku. If you’re Roku TV won’t play any of the apps until you check the connection for the internet under settings there’s a few solutions we’ve researched for you to try. 

Upon checking the connection, everything appears to be working normally. This can be frustrating. When you connect a Roku TV to ethernet this issue does not happen. It is more common on a Roku stick or Roku Ultra.

The solution is to reset the modem for at least 30 seconds,, and if that doesn’t work… reset the TV for 60 seconds. 

Rokus can be used without Wi-Fi, but they have very limited features if you decide to use it this way.. If you don’t have an internet connection, you can use an external hard drive or a fast Micro SD with an adapter to watch content on the Roku.

What should I do if I’m getting charged by Roku?

If you are charged by Roku and you aren’t sure why, you should login to your Roku account and check if there are any pending charges. Next, you can review the invoice of your billing and see if the purchase history shows a more detailed note on what Roku believes you purchased.

If there is no information you may want to check if the charge is actually from Roku themselves and not a different company.

However, If you signed up for a subscription channel like Showtime, HBO max, or Fubo TV, or simply bought a Roku Channel premium, you will receive a statement that can be viewed.

Here’s how to determine your charges via Billing on Roku. This will allow you to check what you are getting billed for monthly on Roku:

• First, confirm the charge is not from a third party service.
• Next, Visit your Roku account at My Roku
• After, Login and navigate to purchase history
• Scroll to the end of the page and locate Content or products
• Finally, Visit details to see the entire description of the purchase.

If you still can’t locate the monthly charge, it is time to contact Roku support and/or create a ticket. 

Bottom Line:

There are absolutely no monthly or annual costs or charges at all to use Roku. Once you pay the purchase fee, your account is ready to use and there are no recurring payments to commit to besides extra premium channels from third party apps within Roku.

Some channels and apps that are available on Roku will cost extra and are monthly subscriptions. Good examples of this are Disney Plus, Prime video, HBO max, and Netflix. 

Furthermore there are a few apps and channels available on Roku that require subscriptions.nd more. These extra channels typically have a recurring cost range from $10.99 and up per month (or $100+ annual total)
